NYC Gallery Week
May 7th kicked off the official NYC Gallery Week. Of course, there are always plenty of galleries to explore in Manhattan, but this week is all about educating the public on modern art. There is typically a stigma with galleries that the only reason for visitation would be if the viewer was interested in purchasing artwork. This week removes the stipulations that gallery browsing is only for the “well-off”.
I appreciate modern art, but it isn’t necessarily my favorite genre. However, I love exploring new things and learning about the motivation and processes artists go through. We visited the Leon Golub exhibit and other Soho galleries, and the theme of many of these paintings seemed to be exploring fetishes by using modern day symbols.

I was looking forward to visiting the new Sheperd Fairey gallery, as he is one of the most influential artists of our day. I don’t love all his Warhol-esque prints, but I appreciate his fascination with propaganda and guerilla art! Unfortunately, the gallery wasn’t open yet, but we got to see one of his latest murals.
