Dead or Alive?
This new exhibit at the Museum of Art and Design is probably one of the coolest things I have ever seen. Showcasing over 30 works of art made primarily from organic materials including feathers, bones, dead plants, and bugs this unique installation is not to be missed. The whole idea of bringing dead organisms back to life is eerie yet fascinating, it also explores the idea of Shaminism and that animals and plants are our spirit guides. I’m not a huge fan of insect art or anything super spiritual, but it was so cool to see how some of these materials were used to create art!
Check out this Damien Hirst piece, similar to his piece in the MAD exhibit. It is a mosiac made entirly of dead butterflies!
My favorite was an installation by contemporary artist Jennifer Trask. A gold frame enclosed what APPEARED to be ceramic flowers, but really they were various skulls/ribs/vertebrea of dead animals. Pretty crazy how something dead and creepy can actually be beautiful. Here is an example of her work:

Another of my favorite installations was a large circle of black beans, corn and other seeds that spelled out the phrase “Modified Seed, Contaminated Food”. Very Food Inc./Michael Pollan-esque. I like.
